A book of tricks for middle school memorization, in PDF (6th-9th grade)

Four examples taken from the file

DOVES. Doute (Doubt), Obligation, Volonté (Will), Émotion (Emotion), Souhait (Wish): the five triggers for the subjunctive, combined into a single word.

Thales, "small over big = small over big = small over big". The three ratios written in the same direction, and you never invert anything again.

E-L-J. The three powers, each summarized by its verb: the executive executes, the legislative makes the law, the judicial judges.

"My King Sets Apples" (French: "Mon Kopain Sait Additionner") The base units of the international system: meter, kilogram, second, ampere.

In the same spirit: "You Invent Well, You, Young Ridiculous Idler" for the order of colors in decomposed light, "He Vexes Xavier, The Common Man" for Roman numerals, and the century rule, with its trap noted on the page: 1500 still belongs to the 15th century, 1501 already to the 16th.

What the file allows

It’s a file that opens on a computer, tablet, or phone: a middle schooler can review a concept on the bus or the day before a test. And you only print what’s useful: the trigonometry pages before the math test, the Methods & Brevet section in 9th grade, or two copies of the same page if you have two children in middle school.

In exchange, printing is at your expense, and 89 pages in color consume ink. You can also choose to print only the subject currently being studied and keep the rest on screen.

PDF or paperback book?

Don't confuse them: the real problem in middle school

In middle school, concepts are not only numerous: they resemble each other. Two similar agreement rules, two figures of speech built on the same principle, two physics formulas with the same look. A test error is rarely a complete blank: it’s confusion, applying the right concept in the wrong place.

Against this, rereading is useless because everything seems familiar. You must give each concept an address that belongs only to it—a word or an image that no neighboring concept can claim. This is the work of a mnemonic device: separating what the course presents side by side.

What remains is to verify that the separation holds. This is done with the notebook closed, by asking yourself the question before looking at the answer: this is the role of the question that closes each content page, the answer to which only appears at the end of the file.

Five cards, five subjects

The cross-product. "I multiply diagonally, I divide by the one that's left." If a/b = c/d, then a×d = b×c. Example from the card: 3/4 = x/20 gives x = (3 × 20)/4 = 15.

"Two stones for the tour, stone-two for the inside". The perimeter of a circle is 2 × π × R, the area of a disk π × R². Two formulas often swapped, separated by a pun. With R = 3: a perimeter of 6π, an area of 9π, which is about 28.27.

The three states of matter. Solid like "Serré" (Tight), Liquid like "Libre" (Free) to flow, Gas like "Grand" (Large) space. The solid keeps its shape, the liquid takes that of the glass, the gas spreads everywhere.

"Small = Lungs". Two words to stop confusing the two blood circulations: the small one goes from the heart to the lungs, where the blood picks up oxygen; the large one irrigates the rest of the body. The card adds the direction of flow in the heart: entry through the atria, exit through the ventricles.

Double Spanish punctuation. The upside-down signs open the question and exclamation, like a road sign before a curve: Spanish warns the reader. The examples on the card are ¿Cómo estás? and ¡Qué bien!

Studying on screen or on paper: what experience shows

The question comes up with every file purchase. A middle schooler can read this PDF on a computer, tablet, or phone, and find a word in two seconds. It’s practical for finding a rule while writing.

For learning, however, the screen has a known flaw: you scroll. You skim, you recognize, you think you know it, and nothing sticks. Paper forces you to stop on one page at a time, and above all, it lets you write on it: underline, check off, cross out what has been mastered. These marks turn reading into studying.

The compromise that works best: consult on screen when looking for something, print when you want to learn. Six or eight pages, those of the subject at hand, rather than all eighty-nine at once.

Being quizzed, rather than rereading

The file is particularly well-suited for two-person use. A parent, sibling, or friend holds the page: they ask the question, the student answers from memory, notebook closed. In thirty seconds, you know what is learned and what is not.

It is more effective than reading alone, for one simple reason: rereading gives the feeling of knowing, answering proves it. A student who stumbles over a rule has just discovered exactly what they need to review, instead of spending an hour on a chapter already mastered.

The same pages can be used in reverse. Explaining a trick to someone else, out loud and without notes, is the best test of understanding there is: you cannot clearly explain what you have not understood.

However, the file does not contain the lessons themselves. It provides shortcuts to remember what was seen in class, not enough to catch up on an entire chapter.
